Senior Tip | Picking a Season

One of the first things to decide on when scheduling your senior session is what season you want. There is no “wrong” season, and if you ask me they are all awesome. I love all the seasons! Now I could handle winter being just a bit shorter but that is a whole different story for a whole different blog post. 😉 So the real answer in short is picking a season all comes down to preference, but there are some great things to consider when deciding.

Fall in Illinois is GORGEOUS, however summer has its pros as well. I love the the awesome colors of Fall, the bright flowering trees of Spring, and the incredible glow of a Summer evening. Oh and of course I love me a good snow session in the Winter! So now you are sitting there probably thinking, well that doesn’t help me narrow it down at all.  So, here are a couple of things that could help narrow down your decision.

  • What does your schedule look like?

Are you involved in fall sports? Does your schedule get crazy as soon as school starts with practices/games? Then maybe we should talk about doing your pictures in the summer when you have more time.  If you are involved in a fall sport but absolutely want a fall session we do have limited availability on weekends and there is also Columbus Day. Most schools are out for the day on Columbus Day and we fill it with several fall senior sessions. But those sessions go early and FAST! So think ahead if you want one of those spots. Another think to consider is you could do your full session in the summer when you have more time and then just do a mini session in the fall. That way you get the best of both worlds. A full session when your time allows it and a little fall color as well.

  • When are your senior pictures due for your yearbook?

This can honestly vary so much from one high school to another. But it is definitely something to consider as it can really limit what time of year you get your photos done. It takes about 2-3 weeks for us to deliver a finished senior gallery so if your pictures are due at the beginning of October then fall is kind of out. So be sure to check with your school and know when the deadline is and plan accordingly.

  • What outfits do you want to wear?

If  you love to layer, wear sweaters, vests and cute scarfs then fall might just be your thing! If you are more the flowy maxi dress, cute tops with jeans or shorts type of girl than summer is a great option! If you are sitting there thinking, I love all the clothes, how can I ever decide, than ask us about our mini sessions! A lot of girls will do summer, fall and winter sessions. It is definitely a fun option.

  • Color

What kind of color are you looking for? If you envision a maxi dress with flowers then don’t plan on fall because the flowers are gone by then. That would be a summer look. I’m talking the fields of yellow flowers, the pretty Queen Anne’s lace photos, that’s summer. If you want flowering trees and bright colored flowers then think Spring. And I LOVE the spring Magnolia trees! I mean they are an absolute favorite of mine, but if you are doing spring you will most likely have to do another session before then because more than likely your yearbook picture will have to be submitted before spring.

Hopefully this has helped you understand a little bit better what season you want. We want you to LOVE your photos and honestly all the season are beautiful so you can’t go wrong. But just keep in mind that if you book a fall session and ask your photographer for flowers, that probably isn’t going to happen. We want your session to be everything you dream it to be, so if you have specifics like that it is best to reach out and let us help you schedule your session. Here are a few of our favorites from each season.
